California League for Nursing
Minutes of Meeting of the Board of Directors
Conference Call
August 28, 2003

The meeting was called to order by the president, Mariamma Mathai, at 4 pm. Present on the conference call were the president and Shannon Perry, Secretary-Treasurer. Cathy Kenney, past-president, was unable to join the call.

Concern was expressed in the May Board meeting about the future of CLN since there is so little member involvement. The major activity of the CLN for the past few years has been to award scholarships. The Board feels that that is still an important function and service to the nursing community. There are still funds available in CLN accounts to award scholarships. A survey was sent out to the membership to solicit advice about the future of CLN. A report of the survey follows:

397 surveys were mailed; 2 came back with incorrect addresses; 15 completed surveys were returned. The sample size is too small to draw any conclusions.

1. What does membership in the CLN mean to you?
• Have always felt that the League was a valuable Resource for nurses. Been a member of NLN for over 40 years.
• I have no idea what this organization is or does
• Have not been active – would like to get involved
• I have never heard of this organization
• Was not aware I was a member – but know I’m in the national group
• ? Member ANA/C & NLN
• I am not sure
• We have no knowledge of this organization! We are NLN members
• I have re-joined NLN after relocating from Massachusetts in 1999. I never was very active with the state NARLIN & I don’t expect to be here. There are so many organizations in California & I’ve not heard anything about the CLN.
• It has been my main general nursing organization over the years. ANA has come, gone and come again based on union organizing. NLN does a good job of focusing on educ, practice & community needs.
• Because there haven’t been activities in this area of So Cal, it hasn’t meant very much to me.
• Very little.
• Never belonged.

2. How can the CLN serve you? ? ( 2)
_3_ Provide continuing education
_2_ Offer scholarships
_1?_ Other Unsure. Keep me/us informed of national issues and trends
• I am retired – if anything would attend C. E. nearby.
• Represent nursing education – AD N specifically
• I do not know what your overarching goals or objectives are so I cannot determine this
• We at the community colleges need a recognized accrediting agency that is not as expensive or enmeshed as NLNAC
• I’m not active. It’s just an organization to list on resumes, etc.

3. Are you willing to serve as an officer or member of the board of directors of CLN
__0_yes _11_no Maybe (1) Possibly (1) ? (1) have done so, can’t at this time.

4. Should CLN be dissolved? _9_ yes _2_ no probably (2) ? (2) Unsure (1)
• I have never attended a meeting so I don’t feel I’m entitled to a vote

5. If you answered yes to #4, what would you like done with the assets (currently
approximately ($16,000).

_6_ Scholarships in California
_4_ Donate to the National League for Nursing Foundation If dissolved, this would
be my rec.
_1_ Other, please specify
• Work with NLN to dev on-line educ – certification prep, help for AA, BSN, etc.
• Donate to the Johnson & Johnson Nursing Recruitment Fund

6. If you answered no to #4, what can we do to develop interest in the CLN?
• This is not a new thing for CLN – as one who spent many years on the Board, and even as President etc it was always hard to make progress – too much competition and not enough willing to put in the time.
• Tell us more about it
• Sorry – I appreciate the efforts you have made, I’m just too busy to help.
• Develop a realistic accrediting agency
As noted above, the sample size was too small to draw any conclusions.

II. Mariamma will try to meet with some AD N faculty at the Summit.
III. Shannon will provide her new contact information to the Board.
IV. The NLN requires a year end report; Mariamma and Shannon will prepare the report.
V. There was discussion of a Nurseweek ad to let people know about the CLN and its function.
VI. Shannon is moving to Arizona. She will send the box of CLN materials to Mariamma.
VII. Oregon is dissolving their league. Shannon will check to see what they have done with their assets and papers.
VIII. CLN has not received any checks recently; Shannon will check to see when they can expect them.
IX. For 2004, CLN will provide the following scholarships:
a. 4 BSN scholarships of $1000 each
b. 6 AND scholarships of $500 each
c. 5 MSN scholarships of $1000 each
d. 2 PhD scholarships of $1000 each

Conference call ended approximately 4:45 pm.
At 7:10 pm, Shannon spoke with Cathy Kenney to report the content of the conference call.

Respectfully submitted,
Shannon Perry, Secretary-Treasurer
